Efficient Nonparametric Smoothness Estimation

چکیده
Sobolev quantities (norms, inner products, and distances) of probability density functions are important in the theory of nonparametric statistics, but have rarely been used in practice, due to a lack of practical estimators. They also include, as special cases, L quantities which are used in many applications. We propose and analyze a family of estimators for Sobolev quantities of unknown probability density functions. We bound the finite-sample bias and variance of our estimators, finding that they are generally minimax rate-optimal. Our estimators are significantly more computationally tractable than previous estimators, and exhibit a statistical/computational trade-off allowing them to adapt to computational constraints. We also draw theoretical connections to recent work on fast two-sample testing and empirically validate our estimators on synthetic data.

Nonparametric denoising Signals of Unknown Local Structure, II: Nonparametric Regression Estimation
We consider the problem of recovering of continuous multi-dimensional functions f from the noisy observations over the regular grid m−1Zd, m ∈ N∗. Our focus is at the adaptive estimation in the case when the function can be well recovered using a linear filter, which can depend on the unknown function itself. In the companion paper [26] we have shown in the case when there exists an adapted tim...
متن کاملA Bayesian nonparametric approach for mapping dynamic quantitative traits.
In biology, many quantitative traits are dynamic in nature. They can often be described by some smooth functions or curves. A joint analysis of all the repeated measurements of the dynamic traits by functional quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping methods has the benefits to (1) understand the genetic control of the whole dynamic process of the quantitative traits and (2) improve the statistica...
متن کاملLearning HMMs with Nonparametric Emissions via Spectral Decompositions of Continuous Matrices
Recently, there has been a surge of interest in using spectral methods for estimating latent variable models. However, it is usually assumed that the distribution of the observations conditioned on the latent variables is either discrete or belongs to a parametric family. In this paper, we study the estimation of an m-state hidden Markov model (HMM) with only smoothness assumptions, such as Höl...
متن کاملThe Asymptotic Minimax Constant for Sup-Norm Loss in Nonparametric Density Estimation
We develop the exact constant of the risk asymptotics in the uniform norm for density estimation. This constant has first been found for nonparametric regression and for signal estimation in Gaussian white noise. Hölder classes for arbitrary smoothness index β > 0 on the unit interval are considered. The constant involves the value of an optimal recovery problem as in the white noise case, but ...
متن کاملAdaptive Variance Function Estimation in Heteroscedastic Nonparametric Regression
We consider a wavelet thresholding approach to adaptive variance function estimation in heteroscedastic nonparametric regression. A data-driven estimator is constructed by applying wavelet thresholding to the squared first-order differences of the observations. We show that the variance function estimator is nearly optimally adaptive to the smoothness of both the mean and variance functions. Th...
